! "Research seems to indicate that Thomas Astleford was born in the lat er half of the 1700's. At least records sent over from Aghold, Co. Wickl ow, Ireland by the Murphys and the Sheans indicate that a Thomas Astlefor d- son of Samuel and Hanna Astleford was Baptized on Jan.11, 1753. Som e researchers question this and think that he was born a few years late r than this - however, no one has been able to come up with a different d ate for his birth. Careful investigation indicates that Thomas was muc h older thatn his wife. It seems that Samuel was married twice and tha t Thomas was his son by his first wife. It was thought for some time tha t he was Samuel's only son, but that he had several daughters by his seco nd wife. However, records indicate that Samuel not only had several daug hters by his second wife but also a son, William, Bapt. in 1887, and wh o later seemed to have gone to Coolcullen. Extract taken from above liste d book.

"Here is a little story that has been handed down to the present tim e through different families. Thomas and a cousin had somehow become inv olved in defending their property during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. On e Protestant man, James Kersey, was warned of a plot by the Irish Catholi cs to drive out the English Protestants. This warning came from a friend ly Catholic neighbor in time for then to escape, however Thomas Astlefor d and his cousin were chased about two miles by rebels with pikes. Whe n they came to a river, Thomas jumped a millrace to escape and in so doin g received a back injury that gave him much trouble until his death thirt y-two years later. Some even question if it might not have been a contri buting factor in his death. The cousin with him was not able to jump th e millrace so turned and shot several of the rebels with a pistol and wa s able to drive then off. James Kersey had daughter Eleanor, who, at th is time was about 14 years old. A few years later She and Thomas Astlefo rd were Married. "Thomas and Eleanor has seven children: William, Mar y, Elizabeth, Samuel, Ellen, Abraham and Elisha. When Thomas Died in 182 9, Eleanor remained on the farm which was on the estate of Lord Fitz Will iam, not far from the town of Carlow. It was during this time that she b uilt the house known as 'The Wood'. She was a good manager, raising mos t of the families neeson the farm. She had a herd of forty cows. She ra ised flax and made their clothes from the linen. In the Irish Famine of 1 847, when potato rot destroyed the crops, the family did well because the y had some of their farm into oats. When each of her daughters married s he gave them a purse full of money and some household furnishing. To thr ee of her sones she gave an education, and kept her youngest son, Elisha , with her on the farm. In 1855 these two came to Canada - at first the y stayed with Eleanor's daughter, Elizabeth, who had come to Canada earli er. Soon, however, Elisha bought his own farm on the 10th concession of M aryborough township, Drayton Ontario. His mother joined him there and i t was on Eliasha's farm that she died, March 10, 1878."
