!DEATH PLACE: Springfield or Chicopee Massachusetts

!LDS Ancestral File has this individual born in Roxbury, Suffolk, Ma.

"Japhet Chapin, of Chicopee, son of Dea. Samuel Chapin, b. 1642; m. ( 1) July 22, 1664, Abilenah Cooley. Mrs Abilenah Chapin d. Nov. 17, 1710 . and a small stone in the old burying ground in Springfield marks the s pot where she was buried. m. (2) May 31, 1711, Dorothy Root of Enfield , Ct. He d. Feb. 20, 1712, and was buried by the side of his first wif e Abilenah. Their remains and the stones which mark thier resting place s have (probably) been removed to the new cemetery in Springfield. "J aphet probably resided for a time in Milford, Connecticut. As the Worshi pful Capt. John Pyncheon of Springfield conveyed to Japhet Chapin of Milf ord, in Connecticut Colony, a small strip of land near Connecticut Rive r in Springfield, bounds east on Deacon Chapin's land. Deed dated 16th o f November, 1669. "By Deed bearing date March 9th, 1666, John Pyncheo n conveyed to Samuel Chapin the greater part of the land lying in the Val ley between Chicopee River and Willimansett Brook. And by Deed bearing d ate April 16th, 1673, Samuel convyed the same premises to his son Japhe t Chapin. The said Japhet built him a house at the upper end of Chicope e street, north-westerly of where the dwelling house of Henry Sherman no w (1862) stands. "Japhet was at the great fight at Turners falls, Ma y 18th, 1676, and otn the outside leaf of an old account book belonging t o said Japhet, I find the folloing, supposed to be in his hand-writing. ' I went out Volenteare against ingens the 17th of May, 1676 and we ingage d batel the 19th of May in the moaning before sunrise and made great Spoi l upon the enemy and came off the same day with the Los of 37 men and th e Captin Turner, and came home the 20th of May.' Thomas Chapin, son of J aphet, was one of the original grantees of the large tract of land whic h was granted to the officers and soldiers and their descendants in the F alls fight. And on another leaf of the same book, I find the following , 'my father was taken out of this troubelsom world the 11 day of Novembe r about eleven of the clock in the eve, 1675.' After the death of Japhe t Chapin, the Rev.Mr.Williams of Deerfield wrote a lengthy letter to hi s children, instructing them concerning the improvement which they shoul d make of his death, and speaking of him as having been a man of great pi ety. This letter is now (1859) probably in the care of Mr. Dormer Chapin . "*Hannah was married Dec. 3, 1703, to John Sheldon of Deerfield. Th e town of Deerfield was attacked by the Indians about three months afte r her marriage, and she was taken captive with many others, and marched t o canada, and after about tow years many of the captives were redeemed an d returned home. I have many reasons for believing that Hannah's husban d went to Canada and obtained here release before the release of the othe r prisoners. John , son of John and Hannah Sheldon of Deerfield, born i n Springfield, April 12, 1706. "1720-21, Obadiah Miller and Widow Doro thy Chapin of Enfield were joined in marriage. (Probably she was the wido w of Japahet." *Mr Chapin made a special note on this entry: "Hannah' s friends felt some anxiety in regard to her settling in a frontier town , and as she was making a dress previous to her leaving the paternal home , her mother told her she must make the dress so it would do to wear int o captivity." "The Opinion of Rev. Samuel Chapin, D.D. of Rockyhill, Ct. as to the N ative place of Dea. Samuel Chapin.
"'Samuel Chapin is believed to be the progenitor of all who bear the n ame is this country. Respecting the history of the family previous to hi s landing here, or the precise time of his arrival, noghing is definitel y known.
"'The family is probably of Welsh origin.
"'His opinion is founded on some obscure traditions recolleced by Calv in Chapin as current in Chicopee and the prevalence of some Welsh phrase s and terms among the people of Chicopee, the greater part of whom bear t his name. Calvin Chapin recollects on one occasion a man who was severel y run by his mother, retorted by calling her Welsh, in the way of reproac h.
"'On a map of England, in the possession of C. Chapin, there is in De rbyshire, the name of Chapin frith, (frith meaning a rough, mountainous r egion of country.) The on another map is wrtten Chapelin or chapalin, an d he thinks perhaps, as they were always a very religious, concientious p eople, they may have been so termed from Chapel, and this name with a lit tle modification became Chapin.
"'Samuel Chapin took the freeman's oath in Boston, in the year (June 2 ,) 1641. He lived probably in Dorchester, and was a Deacon in the Church , a man much esteemed and employed in the public business. He removed t o Springfield in 1642.' -- By Rev A.L. Chapin, D.D., President of Beloi t College, Wis." Excerpt taken from: THE CHAPIN GENEALOGY, CONTAININ G A VERY LARGE PROPORTION OF THE DESCENDANTS OF DEA. SAMUEL CHAPIN, WHO S ETTLED IN SPRINGIELD, MASS, IN 1642. COLLECTED BY ORANGE CHAPIN. NORTHAM PTN: PRINTED BY METCALF & COMPANY 1862. PAGE 1.

"Dea. Samuel Chapin came with his family to reside in Springfield in 1 642. It would rather appear that he resided in this country considerabl e time, perhaps the greater part of his children were born in this countr y, but no record has been found of the birth of but one--the youngest, an d we do not find any record of but one of his sons taking the freemans oa th. David, his son was made a freeman in Springfield, 5th day 2d month , 1649. He is supposed to be the progenitor of all who bear the name i n this country, and I have not found one of the name who could trace thei r lineage to any other source. In 1652, 10th of October, Samuel Chapin w as appointed one of the magistrates of Springfield, and in 1654 his commi ssion was extended indefinitely. He was also much employed in other publ ic business--a useful and highly esteemed man. In the records of the Col ony of Massachusetts Bay in New England," the name John Chapin is mention ed in connection with the building of a movable fort, March 4, 1633-4, an d in july, 1634, mention is made of a meadow a part of which "John Chapi n hath mown." That is all the information I have found respecting him . Whether he is a brother of Samuel or not is a matter of mere conjectur e. Dea. Samuel Chapin died Nov. 11, 1675, age not known. His wifes nam e was Cisily, maiden name not known. Mrs Cisily Chapin died Feb. 8 1683 , age not known.
"It is not supposed that the children of Samuel Chapin are placed her e exactly in the order of their births.
"The Boston City records show that Jane, daughter of Shem Chapin an d Deborah his wife, was born Sept. 16, 1665. He might have been a son o f Dea. Samuel, and died without leaving any male issue.
"Japhet and Henry had families in the north part of Springfield (no w Chicopee.) "David resided for a few years near the centre of the tow n of Springfield, and afterwards removed to Boston.
"Josiah settled in Mendon, Worcester county. He was one of the origi nal grantees of said town; it is said he was from Braintree and built th e first saw-mill in Mendon.
"Probably he did not reside for any great length of time in Springfiel d. Josiah m. Mary. Son Samuel b. Nov. 11, 1659. Spr. records, vol III. , p. 71. For further particulars, see under the head of Josiah Chapin' s Descendants.
"Sarah m. April 14, 1647, Rowland Thomas, and had 13 Children.
"Hannah m. Sept. 24, 1666, to Dea. John Hitchcock, and had 9 chil.
"Deacon Samuel Chapin lived on the home lot next south of the Ministr y lot in the centre of the then village of Springfield. His son Japhet o wned one half of said premises, but sold his right therin (by deed bearin g date November 19, 1667) to Deacon John Hitchcock, who had married sai d Japhet's sister Hannah."
